Cooling Systems are used for Process and HVAC Applications.
Chilled Water / Glycol Systems
Chilled Water or Glycol (for Temperatures below or at freezing), is cooled using mechanical Refrigeration systems and circulated through piping systems. It offers good controlability using modulating valves.
The water or Glycol is a "Secondary" refrigerant, as the refrigeration system is used to cool Secondary Medium, which then cools the Process or Air Conditioning System.
Initial cost is higher, as there are many components involved, and is normally suited to larger systems, or multiple smaller systems.
Direct Expansion Cooling
Direct Expansion (DX) Cooling is as the name suggests, is the ability of the refrigeration system to directly cool the air. This eliminates the requirement for the secondary and allows the direct cooling of the air.
These systems are typically lower first cost, and lower operating costs on systems less than 200 tons.
Advances in electronic controls allow modulation of DX Systems that allow the close tolerance temperature control that was only available with water or glycol systems.
